12th Annual Diwali Gala: A Great Success

The Canada-India Business Council successfully hosted the “12th Annual Diwali Gala” on October 13th, 2015 at the Arcadian Court in Toronto.

Keynote Speakers


Hon. Michael Chan, the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade of Ontario spoke about the tremendous potential between Ontario and India. 

Mr. Calin Rovinescu, the President and CEO of Air Canada spoke about why Air Canada is so bullish on India, and the airline's new direct flight to New Dehli launching in November, 2015.

Mayor John Tory, Mayor of Toronto, discussed the City of Toronto's focus on taking a proactive approach to increasing trade with India.

Awards Ceremony


The Council annual Diwali Gala Awards Ceremony aims to recognize Canadian companies who have made significant impact on Canada-India relations through endeavors in the areas of business, humanitarianism and support of the Council. 

Award: C-IBC Member of the Year 

Presented by C-IBC Chairman, Mr. Yezdi Pavri, the C-IBC Member of the Year Award recognizes the member of the Council who has provided tremendous support towards the Council's activities which aim to promote bilateral trade between Canada and India.

The Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) was the recipient of the award for 2015. The award was accepted by CPPIB's Managing Director, Head of Global Public Affairs, Ms. Lisa Baiton.


Award: Hon. Roy MacLaren P.C. Humanitarian of the Year

Presented by and named in the honour of former C-IBC Chairman, Hon. Roy MacLaren P.C, the Humanitarian of the Year Award recognizes an individual or organization whose work contributed greatly to improving the lives of the poor in India and around the world.

Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) was the recipient of the award for 2015. This year's award was accepted by SCAW's President, Dave Dryden.

Award: The Thomas Bata

Presented by C-IBC Vice-Chairman, Mr. Kam Rathee, and named after the Council's late founder, the Thomas Bata Award recognizes the Canadian company whose business ventures have had the greatest financial impact in 2015 and embody the pinnacle of Canada-India business relations.

Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) was the recipient of the award for 2015. This year's award was accepted by Managing Partner and India Lead, Mr. Anuj Ranjan
