His Excellency Cameron MacKay
High Commissioner for Canada in India
Cameron MacKay is a career diplomat with foreign policy and trade negotiation
experience in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Before his assignment to India he was
Canada’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Prior to that he served as Director
of Operations at the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat of Canada’s Privy Council
Office, providing non-partisan policy advice to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.
In
previous roles at Canada’s foreign ministry he was Director General for Trade Sectors,
Director General for Trade Negotiations and Director General for China Trade Policy. He
also served as Chief Negotiator for Canada’s free trade agreement negotiations with
Panama; with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua; and with Ukraine.
Abroad, from 2010-2012 he was Ambassador to Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.
From 2001-2006 he served at Canada’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and
the World Trade Organization in Geneva. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs
and International Trade in 1995, and spent his early years in the Department working on
Canada’s relations with the United States.
Ambassador MacKay has a bachelor’s degree in economics and industrial relations from
McGill University (Montreal), a master’s degree in environmental studies from York
University (Toronto), and is a graduate of the University of Ottawa’s mid-career certificate
program in Public Sector Leadership and Governance. He speaks English, French and
Spanish. He is married and has two children in university.
